Mayday Hospital, Maternity Block.

The NHS has probably the greatest number of flat roofed 1960's-70's buildings. Many of the three layer bitumous felt roofs are at the end of their 20-30 year lives and the rudimentary insulation (if any) contributes to soaring energy costs.

Specifiers therefore, have been desperately trying to get capital grants for replacement buildings, but with little success. Instead these one time temporary buildings are probably going to have to serve their owners as long again.

Ian Bekusch, the facilities manager for Mayday Hospital had a problem with a flat roof building. The flat roof was old and full of holes. A pitched steel, profiled sheet roof was erected over the flat roof, however, the heat build up within the roof combined with external conditions conspired to cause condensation as bad as rain, which, you guessed it, went through the holes in the flat roof.
"Monoglass" sprayed directly onto the profiled sheet, insulated against the condensation and stopped th roof leaks.
